Teachers started preparations for World Space Week, by talking to the children about Outer Space, the planets, Mars Exploration and about the activities possible around World Space Week. Students told us what they know, what they have learned and what they want to learn about Outer Space. On September 7th students children from VS Kaisermühlen’s VBS 4 and 3A joined the activities by taking part in a unique telecom connection as the only Austrian school to be able to ask questions about Outer Space to scientists at Mission Control Center (MCC) in Innsbruck. ‘Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth’ is organised by the World Space Week Association, in partnership with the Space Generation Advisory Council, The Mars Society, the OeWF (Österreichische Weltraum Forum) and the Kiwispace Foundation. MCC asked the children in what language they would prefer to conduct the TELECOM (video conference), after the unanimous ‚ENGLISH’ the MCC scientist took questions from the children.

„Why is Earth the only planet that has air we can breathe?“

‚How was the sun made?’

„How long does it take to fly from Earth to Mars?“

„Can animals go to space?“ „Do they have to wear a space suit?“

„Have you ever seen an alien?“

„How far is Sedna from VY Canis Majoris?“

„Where do things go when they fall in a black hole?“

The 1 hour time slot with MCC was very informative and motivating for us all. As we gathered our things and got ready to take our break, I heard several children saying:

‚I want to be an astronaut’,

I want to build an atomic rocket’,

‚I want to be a scientist’

,I want to go to Mars!’
